Correction of Abuses at the Lord's Supper

1 Corinthians 11:17-34

11
Chapter 11
17 But in giving this commandment, I do not praise you, because you come together not for the better but for the worse. 18 First of all, when you come together as a church, I hear that divisions exist among you, and in part I believe it. 19 For it is also necessary for heresies to be among you, so that the approved ones may also become manifest among you. 20 Therefore when you come together in the same place, it is not to eat the Lord's supper. 21 For when you eat, each one takes his own supper ahead of the others, and one is hungry, another drinks excessively. 22 Do you not have houses in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and shame those who have nothing? What shall I say to you? Shall I praise you? In this I do not praise. 23 For I received from the Lord what I also handed over to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night he was being handed over, took bread. 24 After giving thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body for you; do this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way also he took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. 27 So whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord unworthily will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. 28 But let a person examine himself, and in this way let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For the one who eats and drinks judgment on himself eats and drinks without discerning the body. 30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and quite a few have fallen asleep. 31 But if we discerned ourselves, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged by the Lord, we are disciplined, so that we will not be condemned with the world. 33 So, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait for one another. 34 If anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, so that you may not come together for judgment. The other matters I will direct when I come.
